Revelation 1:5 

5And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

5 May kindness and peace

be yours

from Jesus Christ,

the faithful witness.

Jesus was the first

to conquer death,

and he is the ruler

of all earthly kings.

Christ loves us,

and by his blood

he set us free

from our sins.

우리를 사랑하시고 자신의 피로 우리 죄에서 우리를 씻으신 분! 피로 씻는다는 것은 부적절한 표현입니다. "씻었다"로 번역된 단어는 "풀어준다"가 되어야 하며, 일반적인 개념은 의심할 여지 없이 "자기의 생명[또는 '자기를 통하여']의 영광으로, 우리 죄에서 우리를 풀어주신 분에게"라는 것입니다. 그 말은 일들 중의 일을 가리킵니다.

I. 이것은 모든 일들 중 가장 중요합니다. 죄에서 영혼을 잃습니다. 죄는 어둠의 사슬이며, 육신만이 아니라 영혼의 모든 기능을 노예로 만들고, 그것을 도덕적 무지와 부패의 세포에 가두는 사슬입니다. 타락한 천사들은 이 어둠의 사슬에 묶인 것으로 묘사됩니다. 이 얼마나 끔찍한 사슬입니까! 그것은, 

(1) 무겁고,

(2) 괴롭히고,

(3) 강하고,

(4) 모든 죄를 지을 때 더 강해집니다.


Ⅱ. 이것은 모든 일들 중에서 가장 중요한 것이며, 오직 그리스도에 의해서 이루어집니다. 여기에서 그분은 자신의 "피"로 그것을 하는 것으로 묘사됩니다. 때때로 그 일은 "물", "말씀", "진리", "은혜", "영"에 귀속됩니다. 

여기에서 이 단어는 자기 희생적인 사역의 상징으로 사용되었습니다. 이것이 그리스도께서 자신의 생명을 주시는 일입니다. 그리스도 외에 이 사슬을 끊을 수 있는 다른 존재는 우주에 없습니다. 그분은 감옥의 문을 열고 갇힌 자들을 자유롭게 하려고 세상에 오셨습니다. "너희가 진리를 알지니, 진리가 너희를 자유케 하리라."

 

III. 이를 위해, 모든 일들 중에서 가장 중요한 것은, 그리스도께서는 영원한 찬미를 받으신다는 것입니다. "우리를 사랑한 분에게." 진정한 감사는 세 가지에 대한 믿음을 의미합니다.

1. 제공되는 서비스의 가치에 대한 믿음. 봉사가 사소하고 중요하지 않은 곳에서는, 감사가 그다지 감동적이지도 강하지도 않을 것입니다.

2. 사역에 영감을 준 동기의 선함에 대한 믿음. 어떤 사람이 우리에게 봉사를 했는데, 그의 동기가 추악하고 이기적이라고 생각되면, 그가 아무리 우리에게 큰 이익을 주더라도, 우리는 고마움을 거의 느낄 수 없습니다.

3. 우리 입장에서 과분한 사역에 대한 믿음. 우리에게 제공한 서비스가 우리에게 가치가 있으나, 그가 법적으로 그런 서비스를 제공할 의무가 있다고 생각한다면, 우리는 감사를 거의 또는 전혀 느낄 수 없습니다. 

이 세 가지 이유로 그리스도에 대한 감사는 이제 최고점에 도달해야 합니다. 

- 더 큰 봉사는 할 수 없었습니다; 

- 더 친근한 동기는 상상할 수 없었습니다; 

- 더 이상 과분한 축복을 베풀 수 없었습니다. 

"우리를 사랑하사" 

그의 피로 우리 죄에서 우리를 해방하시고

Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood! Washing in blood is an incongruity. The word translated "washed" should be "loosened," and the general idea undoubtedly is, "Unto him that loosed us from our sins by his own life [or, 'by himself'] be glory." The words refer to the work of works.

I. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL WORKS. Loosing a soul from sin. Sin is a chain of darkness, a chain that enslaves, not the mere body, but all the faculties of the soul, and confines it in the cell of moral ignorance and corruption. Fallen angels are represented as manacled in this chain of darkness. What a chain is this! It is

(1) heavy,

(2) galling,

(3) strong, and

(4) becomes stronger with the commission of every sin.

II. THIS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL WORKS, IS EFFECTED BY CHRIST, AND BY HIM ONLY. He is here represented as doing it by his own "blood." Sometimes the work is ascribed to "water," to the "Word," to "truth," to "grace," and to the "Spirit." The word is here used as a symbol of his self-sacrificing ministry. This is the work to which Christ gives his life. There is no other being in the universe that can break this chain save Christ. He came into the world to open the prison doors, and to set the captives free. "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free."

III. That for this, the most important of all works, CHRIST RECEIVES THE PRAISES OF ETERNITY. "Unto him that loved us." True gratitude implies a belief in three things.

1. A belief in the value of the service rendered. Where the service is trivial, and of no importance, gratitude will not be very stirring or strong.

2. A belief in the kindness of the motive which inspired the service. If a man renders us a service, and we feel that his motive was sordid and selfish, we could scarcely feel gratitude, however greatly he benefited us.

3. A belief in the undeservedness of the service on our part. If we feel that the service rendered was merited by us, and that the author was bound in justice to render it, we could feel but little if any gratitude. Now, for these three reasons gratitude to Christ must rise to the highest point - a greater service could not be rendered; a kinder motive could not be imagined; a more undeserved benediction could not be conferred. "Unto him that loved us," etc.!
