우리 모두는 "가졌다"고 느꼈다가 "잃는 것"이, 아예 갖지 않는 것보다 더 나쁘다는 것을 느껴야 합니다. 왜냐하면 사람은 마지막에 소유하게 될 것에 따라 책임을 져야 하는 것이 아니라, 한때 소유했던 것과 그 소유가 그에게 더 많은 것을 소유할 수 있는 능력을 주었기 때문입니다. 그러나 "소유하다"라는 단어의 성경적 의미가 무엇인지 기억해야 합니다. "소유한다"는 것은 당신이 그것을 사용하고 즐길 수 있도록 하는 어떤 것을  "붙잡는다"는 것입니다. 

첫째, 기억의 저장소가 있습니다. 성경 구절, 거룩한 시, 거룩한 저자의 글을 마음속에 쌓아 두는 것은 사소한 소유가 아닙니다. 항상 기억의 저장고에 무언가를 더 추가하여 성스러운 기억의 힘을 키우십시오. 그리고 신성한 것들에 대한 기억을 돕고 힘을 실어주는 것이 성령님의 직분과 특권 중 하나라는 것을 결코 잊지 마십시오.

둘째, 새로운 진리를 얻거나 어떤 진리를 더 명확하게 인식하는 것은 매우 실제적이고 매우 즐거운 소유물입니다. 그러나 여러분이 어떤 진리를 "굳게" 붙잡으려면, 그 진리를 어떤 실제적인 것으로 바꾸어야 합니다. 왜냐하면 하느님께서는 그분의 진리가 어떤 한가한 것이 아니라는 것을 매우 지키시기 때문입니다; 여러분은 그 진리를 중심으로 삼고, 그 중심에 항상 또 다른 진리를 모아야 합니다. 그 진리를 내면적으로 살아야 하고; 그다음 그 진리를 외면적으로 살아야 합니다. 그래서 여러분은 자신만을 위해 살아야 할 뿐만 아니라, 다른 사람들을 위해 살아야 합니다. 그 안에서 하나님께 영광을 찬송해야 합니다. 그러면 그 진리가 (당신에게) 머물것이며, 그 진리는 (당신에게서) 성장할 것입니다.

셋째, 여러분은 은혜의 수단인 하나님의 것들을 즐겨 왔습니다. 여러분은 산에 있었기 때문에, 일상 생활의 단순한 의무, 그 의무를 더 잘 수행하기 위해, 산(교회)에서 평지(세상)로 내려와야 합니다.

넷째, 부드럽고 온화한 마음, 즉 하느님이나 사람에 대한 강한 사랑에서 우러나오는 감정은, 매우 소중하게 여겨야 할 것입니다. 그러나 이러한 축복받은 정신적 애정 상태를 유지하려면, 하나님과 아주 가까이 사는 것이 필요합니다. 왁스는 햇볕에 보관해야만 부드러워집니다.

다섯째, 유익한 것으로 인도하는 열린 문은 하나님께서 사람에게 주실 때 큰 은혜입니다. 당신은 그것을 가지고 있습니까?

여섯째, 여러분 중 일부는 그리스도를 여러분의 것이라고 부를 수 있다는 것을 의심하지 말고 알도록 해주셨습니다. 이 모든 것이 사라질 수 있을까요? 네, 사라질 수 있습니다. 그 빛이 사라진다면 그 어둠은 얼마나 클까요! 그것은 모두 당신이 그것을 얼마나 굳건하게 붙잡고 있느냐에 달려 있습니다.

그러므로 "여러분을 부르심과 선택함을 확신해 가며" 인생을 살아가십시오. 작은 저항으로 당신 안에 계신 성령님을 근심하게 하지 마십시오. "굳게 붙잡는" 유일한 방법은 "굳게 붙잡히는 것"입니다. 우리의 연약한 손 아래, 하나님의 전능하심이 놓여 있어야 합니다; 그래서 우리가 이해할 수 있는 것들을, 깨닫도록 해야 합니다.

We must all feel that to "have," and then to "lose," is worse than never to have had. For a man is to be responsible — not according to what he is to be found having at the last, but according to what he once possessed and the capability that possession gave him of possessing much more. But then you must remember what is the Bible sense of that word to "have." To "have" is to "hold" anything that so you can and do use and enjoy it. 

First, then, there are stores of memory. It is no trifling possession to have passages of Scripture, of sacred poetry, of holy authors, laid up in the mind. Increase the power of a sacred memory by always adding something more to the stock. And never forget that it is one of the offices and prerogatives of the Holy Ghost to assist and to empower the memory in Divine things. 

Secondly, the acquisition of a new truth, or a clearer perception of any truth, is a very real and very delightful possession. But, if you would "hold" a truth "fast" you must turn that truth to some practical account, for God is very jealous that His truth be not an idle thing; you must make that truth a centre, round which you are always gathering another and another truth. Then you must live that truth inwardly; and then you must live that truth outwardly. You must live it, not only for yourself; but you must live it for others. You must glorify God in it. And that truth will abide; and that truth will grow.

 Thirdly, you have enjoyed the things of God, the means of grace. You must be coming down from your mount to the plain — to the simple duty of daily life, to do that duty better because you have been upon the mount.

 Fourthly, a soft, tender heart — feelings much drawn out in strong love to God or man — is a thing greatly to be prized. But to maintain that blessed state of a mental affection, it is necessary that you live very close to God. The wax will only be soft if it is kept in the sunshine. 

Fifthly, an open door of usefulness is an exceeding boon when God gives it to a man. Have you it?

 Sixthly, to some of you it has been given to know, and not to doubt, that you can call Christ yours. And can all this pass away? Yes, it can. If that light go out, how great will that darkness be! It all depends upon the firmness and the continuance with which you hold it.

Therefore, spend life in "making your calling and election sure." Do not grieve, by small resistances, that Holy Ghost which is in you. The only way to "hold fast," is to be "held fast." Under our weak hand, God's own omnipotence must lie; and we must be apprehended, that we may apprehend.
