Message to the Church in Laodicea
14And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

The Letter to Laodicea
14 This is what you must write to the angel of the church in Laodicea:
I am the one called Amen!+ I am the faithful and true witness and the source+ of God's creation. Listen to what I say.
15I know everything you have done, and you are not cold or hot. I wish you were either one or the other. 16But since you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17You claim to be rich and successful and to have everything you need. But you don't know how bad off you really are. You are pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
18Buy your gold from me. It has been refined in a fire, and it will make you rich. Buy white clothes from me. Wear them and you can cover up your shameful nakedness. Buy medicine for your eyes, so you will be able to see.
19 I correct and punish everyone I love. So make up your minds to turn away from your sins. 20Listen! I am standing and knocking at your door. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and we will eat together. 21Everyone who wins the victory will sit with me on my throne, just as I won the victory and sat with my Father on his throne.
22If you have ears, listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.

14“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write the following:
“This is the solemn pronouncement of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the originator of God’s creation: 15‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot! 16So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth! 17Because you say, “I am rich and have acquired great wealth, and need nothing,” but do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked, 18take my advice and buy gold from me refined by fire so you can become rich! Buy from me white clothing so you can be clothed and your shameful nakedness will not be exposed, and buy eye salve to put on your eyes so you can see! 19All those I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent! 20Listen! I am standing at the door and knocking! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come into his home and share a meal with him, and he with me. 21I will grant the one who conquers permission to sit with me on my throne, just as I too conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

그렇다면 이 신성한 단어의 의미는 무엇일까요? 그것은 진실을 의미하며, 현실을 의미합니다. 저는 진실의 두려움, - 즉 현실, 진실성, 솔직한 단순함 - 지금 현재의 삶에서 우리의 행동과 인간 영혼의 영원한 생명과 관련한 것을 여러분 앞에 제시하고자 합니다.
첫째, 지상 생활에 관한 것입니다. 우리 각자는 세상에서 살거나, 하나님 안에서 살 수 있습니다. 우리가 하나님 안에서 산다면 - "지금 우리가 육체 가운데 사는 것이 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것이라면" - 우리는 현실의 세상에서 살고 있는 것입니다. 우리가 세상을 위해 살고 있다면, - 즉 세상의 것에 애정을 쏟고 있다면, 우리는 치명적인 환상과 희미해지는 그림자 속에서 살고 있는 것입니다.
사람이 참 빛을 한 번만 보게 되면, 이 지구의 반짝이는 무대의 희미한 조명을 완전히 경멸하는 법을 배우게 됩니다. 영원에서 나온 단 한 줄기 빛이 그의 마음을 비추게 하십시오. 그러면 그에게는 세상과 세상의 모든 일들이 하찮게 느껴질 것입니다.

교회는 전적으로 그리스도의 임재에만 의존합니다. 종교적 당파들은 항상 하나님의 영원한 진리가 아니라, 의심스럽고, 궁금하고, 무가치한 것에 대해 가장 큰 열심을 보이며, 종종 어떤 단일 문장에 대한 가장 심각한 오해를 주장하기 위해, 그리스도 복음의 전체 본질적인 메시지와 의미를 지나쳐 버립니다.
그러나 하나님은 아멘의 하나님, 즉 진리의 하나님입니다. 그렇다면 우리 믿음의 근거와 행동의 근거를 살펴봅시다. "너희가 행실의 위선으로, 약간의 비현실적인 믿음으로, 진리의 하나님께 거짓의 부정한 제물을 드리겠느냐?"
진실성, 성실성, 거룩함 - 기독교의 기본적인 은혜, 믿음, 소망, 사랑 - 기독교의 주된 의무, 맑은 정신, 절제, 정조 - 이것들은 참된 종교의 것들이며 시험들입니다. 이것들을 제외한 다른 모든 것들은 변두리이고 위선입니다.
What, then, is the meaning of this sacred word? It means truth; it means reality. I want to bring before you the awfulness of truth — that is, of reality, of sincerity, of guileless simplicity, both as regards our conduct in the life that now is and as regards the eternal life of man's spirit.
First, as regards our earthly life. We may each of us spend our lives either in the world or in God. If we live in God — "if that life which we now live in the flesh is lived by faith in the Son of God" — then we are living in the world of reality. If we are living for the world — if we are setting our affections on the things of the earth — we are living in the midst of fatal delusions and fading shadows.
Let a man but once catch a glimpse of the true light, and he learns utterly to despise the dim rushlights of this earth's tinselled stage; let but one ray out of eternity shine down into his heart, and for him the world and the things of the world shrivel into insignificance. God is the Amen, and all His laws are eternal: they abide for ever; they are laws not only of reality, not only of righteousness, but of pleasantness and peace. Earnestly, then, would I invite you all to base yourselves on the "Amen," on the solid and ultimate reality of life, by denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, and living soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. And no less earnestly would I invite you to base your unshaken lives on the Amen of true religion, without which the house of your life will only be built upon sand.
The Church depends solely on the presence of Christ. Religious partisans show their greatest zeal always not for God's eternal verities, but for what is doubtful and questionable and valueless, and often they pass over the whole essential message and meaning of the gospel of Christ in order to insist on the grossest misinterpretation of some single text. But God is the God of Amen, that is, of truth. Let us then look to the basis of our faith and the basis of our conduct. "Will ye, by hypocrisy in conduct, will ye, by petty unreality in faith, offer to the God of Truth the unclean sacrifice of a lie?" Reality, sincerity, holiness — the elementary Christian graces, faith, hope, love — the primary Christian duties, soberness, temperance, chastity — these are the things and these are the tests of a true religion; apart from these all else is fringes and phylacteries.
