2 As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.

with other young women,
you are a lily among thorns.

가시나무들 가운데 있는,
(자신의 향기를 모든 주변 사람들에게 퍼지게 하여 기쁘게 하는)
백합화처럼,
I. 주님은 그분의 백합화를 이런 주변 환경에서 자라게 합니다.
가시나무란 표현에 의해, 우리는 다음을 이해할 수 있습니다.
1. 경건하지 않은 사람들의 세상.
"불에 타는 자들 중에, 이브, 인간의 아들들, 그들의 이빨은 창과 화살이요, 그들의 혀는 예리한 칼이니" (시편 57:4 내 혼이 사자 중에 처하며, 내가 불사르는 자 중에 누웠으니, 곧 인생 중에라. 저희 이는 창과 살이요, 저희 혀는 날카로운 칼 같도다).
"성도는, 이 세상에 있는 동안, 부적절하고 적대적인 영들 사이에서, 자신을 발견하게 될 것을 기대해야 합니다."
2. 시련과 유혹들.

고린도 후서 12:7 여러 계시를 받은 것이 지극히 크므로 너무 자고(自高)하지 않게 하시려고 내 육체에 가시 곧 사단의 사자를 주셨으니 이는 나를 쳐서 너무 자고하지 않게 하려 하심이니라 8 이것이 내게서 떠나기 위하여 내가 세 번 주께 간구하였더니,)
3. 우리의 영적 성장 방해와 삶에 대한 위험.
"가시가 솟아 올라 그들을 질식시켰다" (마태복음 13:22, 가시떨기에 뿌리웠다는 것은 말씀을 들으나 세상의 염려와 재리의 유혹에 말씀이 막혀 결실치 못하는 자,).
생각해보면, 이건 놀라운 일입니다. (가시나무들 속에서) 백합화가 어떻게 해서든 살아가고 있다는 것이.
4. 다른 모든 것들은 주님의 것입니다.
본문에서는 다른 모든 딸들을 그녀와 비교하고, (백합화 같은) 그녀에 대비하여 모두 가시나무로 분류 합니다.
믿음에 속하지 않는 것이 죄라면, 그 이유가 무엇이든 간에, 그것은 "가시나무"라는 불명예스런 이름에 속합니다. 이것이 바로 성도들의 영혼이 있는 주변 환경입니다.
II. 그럼에도 불구하고 백합들은 그곳에서 자랍니다.
사실 백합들은 그렇게 살아서 숫자가 증가합니다.그 이유는 주님이 바울에게 말했습니다. 바울이 자신의 몸에 있는 가시에 대하여 "주님에게 3 번이나 낫게 해달라고 구하였을 때“:
"내 은혜는 너에게 충분하다. 나의 힘은 약함에서 완전해진다" (고린도 후서 12:9, 내 은혜가 네게 족하도다! 이는 내 능력이 약한데서 온전하여짐이라 하신지라,). 그 사건에 대해 다른 설명은 없습니다. 이것은 경이로움 그 자체입니다.
III. 성도들이 어디에 있는 것은 주님의 은혜와 지혜 안에 있습니다.
그것에 의해 얼마나 많은 현명하고 거룩한 목적이 확보됩니까!
1. 하나님의 은혜는 성도들 안에서, 또 성도들에 의해서 확대됩니다.
(성도들이) 도움이 많고, 거의 방해가 없는, 유리한 환경 속에서는 영적으로 성장하기가 쉽습니다. 그런 성장은 특별하게 주목할 것이 없습니다. 그런 봉사가 보편적이고, 인기가 있는 곳에서, 그리스도의 종이 된다는 것은 어려운 일이 아닙니다.
그러나 (성도들이) 가시나무들 속에서, 방해하는 모든 것들 속에서, 그리스도 섬김을 어렵게 하는 모든 환경 속에서, 주님을 섬긴다면, (성도들에 의해서) 주님의 은혜가 확대됩니다.
2. 세상은 지옥으로 부터 보호됩니다.
건조하고, 쓸모가 없고, 해로운 모든 가시나무들은 오직 불에 태우기에만 적합합니다. 만약 하나님의 성도들이 쫓겨난다면, 이 세상은 어떻게 될까요? 그러면 정말로 인생은 살 가치가 없을 것입니다. 차라리 인간으로 태어나지 않았더라면 더 좋았을 것입니다.
3. 가시나무들이 백합화로 변화 될 수도 있습니다.
물론 이것은 자연계에서는 불가능하지만, 영적으로는 불가능한 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께 감사합니다. 그런 변화가 종종 일어나고, 또 그럴 수 있도록, 하나님은 당신의 백합화들을 그 가시나무들 속에서 자라게 하십니다.
"아버지께서 나를 보내신 것 같이, 나도 너희들을 보낸다" 라고 주님은 제자들에게 말했습니다. 하나님 아버지는 세상을 구하기 위해 아들인 주님을 보내셨습니다. 그러므로 그분들의 규정에 따르면, 이것은 하나님 백성들의 사명입니다. 따라서 성도들은 (가시나무들이) 있는 곳에 있어야만 합니다.
IV. 하지만 항상 그렇게 (가시나무들 주변에) 있는 것은 아닙니다.
백합화는 하나님의 낙원에서 영원히 꽃 피도록 이식 될 것입니다.
그리고 가시나무들! -그들에게 적합한 것이 행해질 것입니다.
그러므로 우리가 계곡의 백합화가 상징하는 축복받은 사람들에게 속해 있다면, 불평하지 말고, 우리의 사명이 무엇인지 상기하고, 그것을 성취하려고 노력합시다.
우리들 각자 스스로에게 물어 봅시다 -
나는 백합화인가? 아니면, 가시나무인가?

As the lily among thorns.
I. HE DOES SET HIS LILIES AMID SUCH SURROUNDINGS, By the thorns we may understand:
1. The world of the ungodly. "Among them that are set on fire, eve, the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword" (Psalm 57:4). "The saint must expect to find himself, while in this world, among uncongenial and hostile spirits."
2. Trials and temptations. (Cf. Paul's "thorn in the flesh.")
3. Hindrances to our growth and peril to our life. "The thorns sprang up and choked them" (Matthew 13.). 'Tis a wonder, when we think of it, how any of these lilies live at all
4. All others them they who are the Lord's. The speaker in text compares all other daughters with her, and classes them all with the thorns as compared with her. If whatsoever be not of faith be sin, then, whatsoever it be, it comes under this ill-sounding name of "thorns." Such are the surroundings of the saintly soul.
II. NEVERTHELESS, THEY GROW THERE. As a fact, they do and increase. And the reason is that given to Paul when he "besought the Lord thrice" concerning his thorn: "My grace is sufficient for thee:... my strength is made perfect in weakness." There is no other account to be given of the matter. It is all a marvel but for that.
III. AND IT IS IN HIS GRACE AND WISDOM THAT THEY ARE WHERE THEY ARE. How many wise and holy ends are secured by it!
1. God's grace is magnified in and by them. It is easy to grow amid favourable surroundings, where much helps and but little hinders. Growth there is not remarkable. To be Christ's servants where such service is general, and even popular, is no hardship. But if amid thorns, amid all that hinders, all that makes it difficult to serve Christ, if there we serve him, then is his grace magnified.
2. The world is kept from being hell. From being all thorns, dry, barren, hurtful, fit only for the fire. What would this world be if God's saints were taken out of it? Life would, indeed, then be not worth living. It would be better had men never been born.
3. The thorns may be led to become lilies. Of course, this is impossible in the natural world, but, thank God, not in the spiritual. And such transformation often occurs, and that it may, God places his lilies where they are. "As the Father hath sent me, so send I you," he said to his disciples. But the Father sent the Son to save the world. This, therefore, in their measure is the mission of his people, and hence they must be where they are.
IV. BUT IT WILL NOT BE SO ALWAYS. The lilies shall be transplanted that they may bloom forever in the Paradise of God. And the thorns! - what is fit for such will be done. Therefore if we be of the blessed number whom the lilies of the valleys represent, let us not murmur, but remember what our mission is, and seek to fulfil it. And let each one of us ask - Which am I, lily or thorn?
