Songs 3:1
1 By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
1 While in bed at night,
I reached for the one I love
with heart and soul.
I looked for him,

이 구절에서 말하는 것은 꿈입니다. 그녀가 그런 꿈을 꾸었다고 말하는 것은 당연했습니다. 이야기를 영적인 것의 더 높은 수준으로 끌어 올리면, 이 구절이 말하는 것은-
I. 일반적으로 꿈에 관한 것.
그 꿈들은 종종 삶과 성격의 시현입니다. 때때로 그 꿈들은 그저 어리석은 일이며, 심하고 과도하게 살찐 몸에서 내뿜는 안개 낀 증기와 같습니다. 그러나 다른 경우에는, 여기와 같이, 더 깊은 의미가 있습니다.
그 꿈들은 사람의 삶의 방식, 그가 좋아하는 것들의 성향, 그의 영혼의 성격을 보여줍니다. 우리의 꿈들은 결코 우리를 거짓되게 만들지 않습니다. 꿈들의 행동을 지배하는 동기는 우리의 행동을 지배하는 동기입니다. 사람은 자신이 너무 좋아하는 죄들에 대해 꿈을 꿉니다; 그의 삶을 괴롭히는 슬픔에 대해; 그의 마음에 정착된 기쁨에 대해.
꿈들은 하나님의 인간 통치에 큰 역할을했습니다. 그 꿈들은 종종 우리가 피해야 할 것과, 추구해야 할 것을 보여줍니다. 어떤 꿈들은 어리석어 보이기도 하지만, 우리는, 마치 모두 꿈들이 그런 것처럼, 꿈들을 경멸 할 수는 없습니다.
II. 이 꿈에 대해.
두 단계 모두 꿈꾸는 자의 열렬한 사랑을 드러냅니다.
1. 슬프게 시작되었습니다.
그녀는 사랑하는 사람을 잃었다고 생각했습니다 (1, 2 절1내가 밤에 침상에서 마음에 사랑하는 자를 찾았구나 찾아도 발견치 못하였구나 2이에 내가 일어나서 성중으로 돌아다니며 마음에 사랑하는 자를 거리에서나 큰 길에서나 찾으리라 하고 찾으나 만나지 못하였구나).
이것은 새롭게 된 영혼에게 가장 깊은 고통입니다 (참조, 시편 77 : 1-4 1내가 내 음성으로 하나님께 부르짖으리니 하나님께 내 음성으로 부르짖으면 내게 귀를 기울이시리로다 2나의 환난날에 내가 주를 찾았으며 밤에는 내 손을 들고 거두지 아니하였으며 내 영혼이 위로 받기를 거절하였도다 3내가 하나님을 생각하고 불안하여 근심하니 내 심령이 상하도다 4주께서 나로 눈을 붙이지 못하게 하시니 내가 괴로워 말할 수 없나이다).
만약 천국이 천국이 아니라면, 그리스도의 임재가 철수한 것처럼, 우리가 그분을 갖지 않는다면, 이 삶은 얼마나 더 어둡고 두렵겠습니까! 그래서 그녀는 그분을 어떻게 찾았는지 이야기합니다.
(1) 도시에서, 사람들의 사업과 혼란 속에.
그러나 그가 거기에 있다는 정보는 거의 없습니다. 그들은 그를 발견하면 아마도 그를 십자가에 못 박을 것입니다. 그래서 세상이 그에 대해 가지고있는 증오가 그렇게 치명적입니다. 미덕이 사랑 받기 위해서 보여져야만 한다는 것은 사실이 아닙니다. 우리 주님이 겪으신 것처럼, 그렇게 될 것입니다.
(2) 그리고 집회에서, 사회에서.
우리는 그가 거기에 있지 않았다는 사실에 놀라지 않습니다. 사회! 그 단어는 그리스도의 임재를 소중히 여기는 공동체의 생각을 이끌어 냅니까?
(3) 그러나 파수꾼들조차 그녀에 대해 말할 수 없었다.
얼마나 잘못됬습니까! 시온의 파수꾼, 그리스도가 어디에서 발견 될지 몰랐습니다! 그들은 그녀를 찾았고, 그녀의 결점을 발견했을 가능성이 높았지만, 그녀가 그를 찾도록 도울 수 없었습니다.
그러한 목회자들이 있고, 그들에게 "배고픈 양들이 쳐다 보지만, 먹을 것을 주지 않는다". 이런 것들이 그녀를 실패하게 했을 때, 우리는 그 영혼의 고통을 상상할 수 있습니다. 그리스도가 있을 만한 곳을 갈망하며 하나님의 집에 갔으나, 아무러 도움도 못받고 돌아온다는 것은, 알려지지 않았거나 사소하지 않은 (큰) 슬픔입니다. 그러나 그녀의 꿈은 그렇게 끝나지 않았습니다.
2. 즐겁게 끝났습니다.
(1) 그녀의 사랑하는 사람이 그녀에게 자신을 드러냈다.
그녀는 "그분을 찾았습니다. 그러나 그분이 보여주는 것 외에 우리의 발견은 무엇입니까? (참조, 요한 1에서 언급 한 그리스도의 네 가지 발견). 우리가 일요일과 예배와 설교를 마치고 그리스도를 찾지 못했을 때, 그분은 다른 계절, 장소 및 상황에서, 우리에게 매우 자주 발견됩니다! 그분이 자신을 찾지 않는 장소들에서 발견이 된다면 - 그분이 말하는 것처럼- "나를 찾는자는, 나를 찾을 것이다"라는 그의 말은 얼마나 더 많은 것을 성취하겠습니까!
(2) 그녀는 그에게 갈망했다.
"내가 그를 붙잡았다" 등등. 영혼은 그녀의 기도, 신뢰, 친교, 봉사, 자기 항복으로 그녀의 주님을 붙잡았습니다. 이런 것들은 사랑하는 사람을 붙잡고, 그분을 놓아주지 않을 것입니다.
(3) 그녀는 그의 사랑에 대한 완전한 확신에 매우 만족할 것입니다 (4 절, 그들을 떠나자마자 마음에 사랑하는 자를 만나서 그를 붙잡고 내 어미 집으로, 나를 잉태한 자의 방으로 가기까지 놓지 아니하였노라). 우리는 영혼을 행복하게하는 종교를 갖기로 결심해야 합니다. 이것을 하지 않는 종교는 거의 행복하지 않습니다. Cf. 탕자의 비유에 나오는 맏아들은 종교가 있었지만, 그것은 모두 어둡습니다. 그렇게 만족하지 맙시다. 그리고 우리가 찾고, 발견하고, 점착하고, 여기에 명시된대로 계속한다면, 주님의 기쁨이 우리의 것이 될 것입니다.
III. 깨어있는 것에 관하여.
5절(예루살렘 여자들아 ! 내가 노루와 들 사슴으로 너희에게 부탁한다 사랑하는 자가 원하기 전에는 흔들지 말고 깨우지 말지니라)은 그녀가 깨어 있고, 그녀가 사랑하는 사람의 사랑을 의식하며, 그가 기뻐할 때까지 떨어지지 않을 것임을 보여 줍니다 (참조, 솔로몬의 노래 2 : 7 예루살렘 여자들아 내가 노루와 들사슴으로 너희에게 부탁한다 내 사랑이 원하기 전에는 흔들지 말고 깨우지 말지니라).
깨어있는 영혼은, 꿈에서 슬퍼한 것은 공포에 불과하지만, 기뻤던 것은 지속적인 현실이라는 것을 알게됩니다. 우리는 실제로 그리스도를 잃을 수 없습니다. 우리가 그렇다고 생각할 수 있을지라도, 그를 찾는 영혼은 (다시) 그를 발견할 것입니다.

It is a dream that is told of in these verses. It was natural for her who tells it to have dreamt such a dream. Lifting up the story to the higher level of things spiritual, what these verses say suggests -
I. CONCERNING DREAMS GENERALLY.
They are often revelations of life and character. Sometimes they are mere folly, the misty vapours exhaled by a gross and over-fed body. But at other times, as here, they have a deeper meaning. They show the manner of a man's life, the bent of his inclinations, the character of his soul. Our dreams never play us false. The motives that govern their acts are the motives that govern ours. A man dreams about the sins he loves too well; about the sorrows that haunt his life; about the joys on which his heart is set. Dreams have played a large part in God's governance of men. They often show us what we should avoid and what we should seek after. Though some are foolish, we cannot afford to despise them as if all were so.
II. CONCERNING THIS DREAM.
In both its stages it reveals the fervent love of the dreamer.
1. It began sorrowfully. She thought she had lost her beloved (vers. 1, 2). This the deepest of distresses to the renewed soul (cf. Psalm 77:1-4). If heaven would cease to be heaven, as it would were Christ's presence withdrawn, how much more must this life be all dark and drear if we have him not! And she tells how she sought him.
(1) In the city, amid the business and turmoil of men. But it is but little that he is there. They would most probably crucify him if they found him, so deadly is the hate the world hath for him. It is not true that virtue needs only to be seen to be loved. As our Lord was dealt with, so would it be.
(2) And in the assemblies, in society. And we cannot be surprised that he was not there. Society! does that word summon up the idea of a community who would cherish Christ's presence?
(3) But even the watchmen could not tell her of him. How wrong this! Zion's watchmen, and not know where Christ is to be found! They had found her, and very likely found fault with her, but they could not help her to find him. Such pastors there are, and to them "the hungry sheep look up, and are not fed." We can picture the soul's distress when these failed her. To have gone to the house of God hungering for direction Christwards, and to come back with none at all - that is a sorrow not unknown nor slight. But her dream did not end so.
2. It ended joyfully.
(1) Her beloved revealed himself to her. She "found him. But what is our finding other than his showing? (cf. the four findings of Christ told of in John 1.). How often when we have passed from" Sundays and services and sermons, and have not found Christ, he is found of us in some other season, place, and circumstances! If he be found of them that seek him not - as he says he is - how much more will he fulfil his word, "They that seek me shall find me"!
(2) And she clave to him. "I held him," etc. The soul thus holds her Lord by her prayers, her trust, her communion, her service, her self-surrender. These grasp the Beloved, and will not let him go.
(3) And she will be content with nothing less than the full assurance of his love (ver. 4). We should resolve to have a religion that makes the soul happy. The religion that does not do this does but little at all. Cf. the elder son in the parable of the prodigal, he had a religion, but it was all gloom. Let us not be satisfied so. And if we seek, and find, and cleave, and so continue as set forth here, the joy of the Lord shall be ours.
III. CONCERNING THE AWAKING.
Ver. 5 shows that she is awake, and conscious of the love of her beloved, and would not be torn therefrom until he pleased (cf. on Song of Solomon 2:7). But, awake, the soul finds that what was sad in her dream was but a dread, but what was joyful is an abiding reality. We cannot lose Christ really, though we may think we do; and the soul that seeks him shall find him.
