I. 그리스도 예수는 믿을 수 없을 정도로 신자에게 

귀중합니다.

먼저 그리스도와의 친교만큼 신자에게 기쁨을 

주는 것은 없다는 점을 주목하십시오. 

우리가 평가를 하자면, 

땅에서의 기쁨은 하늘의 만나인 예수와 비교할 때 

돼지의 껍질보다 조금 낫습니다.

나는 육신의 즐거움으로 가득찬 이 세상보다 

그리스도의 사랑을 한 입 머물고, 그분과의 우정을 

한 모금 마시기를 원합니다. 

알곡인 밀에 비하면 껍질인 왕겨는 무슨 의미가 

있겠습니까? 진실한 다이아몬드에 비하면 반짝이는 

풀은 무슨 의미가 있겠습니까? 영광스러운 현실에 

비하면 꿈은 무슨 의미가 있겠습니까? 

가장 멸시받는 지위에 있는 우리 주 예수님과 

비교할 때, 최고의 시기에 있는 환상적인 시간은 

무슨 의미가 있겠습니까?

그리스도가 신자에게 매우 귀중하다는 것은 

분명히 알 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 신자에게는 

그리스도 없이는 좋은 것이 없기 때문입니다. 

오, 내 주님이 없는 이 세상은 얼마나 울부짖는 

광야입니까! 만일 주님이 화를 내며  잠시라도 

숨어버리시면, 내 동산의 꽃은 시들어 버리고, 

나의 즐거운 열매는 썩어버립니다; 새들은 노래를 

멈추고, 깜깜한 밤은 나의 모든 희망을 축소시켜 

버립니다.

한편, 지상의 모든 위안이 당신을 만족시키지 

못했을 때, 당신은 주님 안에서 충분하게 

위로 받지 않았습니까? 

가난했던 때를 기억하십니까? 오! 그리스도께서 

당신에게 얼마나 가까이 계셔서, 당신을 얼마나 

부자로 만드셨습니까! 

당신은 사람들에게 경멸당하고 거부당했습니다. 

아무도 당신에게 좋은 말을 해주지 않았습니다! 

아! 그 때 그분과의 친교는 달콤했으며, 

"두려워하지 말라; 내가 너와 함께 있으니: 

당황하지 말라; 나는 너의 하나님이니라" 하고 

말하는 것을 듣고 얼마나 기뻐했습니까!

고난이 많을수록 그리스도 예수의 위로가 

넘칩니다. 신자가 그의 스승인 예수님을 버리는 

것보다 더 빠르게 모든 것을 포기할 것이라고 

말한다면, 나는 진실을 왜곡하지 않아야 합니다. 

만약 그리스도를 부인하거나, 당신이 가진 

가장 소중한 것을 포기해야 할 순간이 온다면, 

당신은 어느 쪽을 선택할지 고민할 것입니까?

 

저는 우리가 더 멀리 나갈 수 있다고 생각합니다. 

사랑하는 친구 여러분, 모든 것을 포기할 수 

있을 뿐만 아니라, 예수님을 사랑하는 마음이 

뜨겁고, 우리들의 육체가 그 열정 아래에 

놓여 있을 때, 우리는 무엇이든 그리스도와 함께 

고통 받을 수 있다고 생각합니다.

나는 새뮤얼 러더 포드(Samuel Rutherford)의 

편지에서 특별한 표현을 봤는데, 그곳에서 그는 

하나님의 모든 진노의 숯이 그리스도의 머리에 

떨어져서, 그의 백성들중 누구에게도 떨어지지 

않도록 했습니다. "그러나 그 숯 중 하나가 

예수님의 머리에서 소변으로 나와서 나를 흠뻑

적신다면, 그리고 내가 그것이 예수님에게 

떨어진 숯의 일부라고 느낀다면, 나는 예수님을 

위하여, 예수님과의 교제 안에서, 또

나의 천국을 위하여, 그것을 선택할 것입니다.

사랑하는 여러분, 제가 아는 한 사실만으로도  

여러분이 그리스도를 매우 소중하게 여겨서 

다른 사람들도 그분을 알기를 원한다는 것을 

증명할 수 있습니다. 

사랑하는 여러분, 

당신의 사랑이 커 갈수록, 바울처럼 

더 많은 노력을 하여, 그리스도가 택하신  

몸통의 나머지 부분들이 그들의 영광스러운 

머리부분과 연결이 될 때까지 당신의 소망

(다른 사람들이 그분을 사랑해야한다)도 

점점 더 커질 것입니다.

 

II. 그리스도에 대한 영혼의 신념이며, 그녀가 

그렇게 하는 좋은 이유가 있습니다.

그녀 자신이 한말 "몰약 향낭은 내가 사랑하는 

자" 입니다. 예수 그리스도는 몰약과 같습니다.

 

(1) 몰약은 그 소중함으로 인해 그리스도의 모형이 

될 수 있습니다.

그것은 매우 비싼 약이었습니다. 우리는 야곱이 

그 땅의 특산물중 하나로 이집트에 몰약의 일부를 

보냈다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 몰약은 항상 성경에서

부유하고, 희귀하며, 값비싼 물질로 언급됩니다. 

그러나 몰약은 그분과 비교할 수 없습니다. 

예수 그리스도는 너무 귀중해서 하늘과 땅을 

다 합친다 해도 그것으로 (예수님 대신) 새로운 

다른 구세주를 살 수 없을 것이기 때문입니다.

 

(2) 또 몰약은 기쁨이었습니다.

몰약향이 나는 방에 있는 것은 즐거운 일이었습니다. 

코를 통해 들어오는 몰약 향기는 인간의 마음을 

즐겁게 합니다. 그러나 그리스도께서는 하나의 

경로가 아니라, 모든 경로를 통해 그의 백성에게 

즐거움을 주십니다.

 

(3) 더욱이 몰약은 향수입니다.

몰약은 다른 것들에 달콤한 향기를 내도록 하기 

위해 사용됩니다. 사랑하는 여러분, 예수 그리스도는 

확실하게 당신의 백성들에게 향수를 뿌리십니다. 

주님이 달콤한 향기를 맡으실 수 있도록, 백성들의 

기도에 향수를 뿌리시지 않겠습니까? 

주님의 백성들이 달콤한 향기가 가득한 

향수병처럼 되도록 하기 위해서, 그들이 찬양하는 

노래에 향수를 뿌리시지 않겠습니까?

 

(4) 몰약에는 방부제 특성이 있습니다.

몰약은 부패를 방지하기 위해 사용되었습니다. 

그리스도 예수를 제외하고, 영혼을 보존 할 수 있는 

것은 무엇이 있습니까? 우리의 일들(그 자체로 죽고, 

타락하고, 썩어가는 것)이 부패되지 않도록 지켜주는 

몰약은 무엇입니까? 다시 말해, 

우리의 일들이 하나님의 코에서 악취가 나도록 

부패하는 것을 막아주고 있는 것은 무엇입니까? 

우리의 일들속에 그리스도가 계십니까?

 

(5) 몰약은 소독제로도 사용이 되었습니다.

의심할 여지없이 몰약에는 전염병을 예방할 수 

있는 힘이 있습니다. 형제 여러분, 저는 그리스도와 

함께 하는 것도 이러한 몰약의 힘과 같다고 

확신합니다. 

여러분은 거대한 전염병환자의 집과 

같은 세상으로 가야 합니다; 그러나 당신이 

그리스도를 품고 다닌다면, 당신은 절대로 

세상의 질병에 걸리지 않을 것입니다.

 

(6) 고대 의사들은 몰약이 이것보다 

더 많은 효능이 있다고 믿었습니다. 

그것은 치유였습니다. 

몰약은 단순히 질병을 예방하는 것이 아니라, 

질병을 치유하였습니다. 여러분의 그리스도가 

영혼을 치유하는 최고의 약이라는 것은 확실합니다. 

그의 이름은 "Jehovah Rophi" 입니다. 

"나는 그들을 고치는 주다(Ex 15:26: 나는 너희를 

치료하는 여호와임이니라 ; "I am the LORD 

your God, and I cure your diseases.").

 

(7) 몰약은 동양에서 미용품으로 사용되었습니다.

동양 여성들은 몰약이 얼굴의 주름과 얼룩을 

제거한다는 신념이 있어서 그녀들의 매력을 

완성하기 위하여 몰약을 끊임없이 사용했습니다. 

나는 어떻게 그런 효과가 있는지는 모르지만, 

그리스도와 함께 있는 것만큼 신자를 아름답게

 만드는 것은 없다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 

그리스도와 함께 있는 신자는, 하나님과 거룩한 

천사들과 그리고 그의 동료들의 눈에 

아름답게 비칩니다.

 

(8) 몰약은 희생제물의 유래에서 우리 주님의 

상징으로 사용될 수 있습니다.

그것은 제사장들이 기름을 부을 때 사용되는 

성유와 하나님 앞에서 영원히 타오르는 유향을 

만드는 데 사용되는 귀중한 약 중 하나였습니다. 

그래서 몰약은 그리스도의 희생적인 성품을 

상징합니다. 이런 희생적인 성품은 그리스도가 

당신의 백성들에게 가장 소중하다는 것을 상징하는 

모든 것의 근원과 기초가 됩니다. 

오 하나님의 어린 양, 우리들의 대속물이여, 

우리는 당신을 기억해야합니다.

 

2. 그리스도는 몰약 향낭, 또는 일부 번역에서는 

몰약 봉지 또는 몰약 상자라고합니다.

세 종류의 몰약이 있었습니다; 작은 나무가지 몰약이 

있었는데, 그것을 태우면 달콤한 향기가 

만들어졌습니다. 그 다음에는 말린 향신료 같은 

몰약이 있었습니다. 셋째로는, 흐르는 기름 같은 

몰약이 있었습니다. 

이 구절에서는 어떤 종류의 

몰약을 지칭하는지 알 수는 없습니다만, 

왜 "몰약 향낭"이라고 말하는 걸까요?

 

(1) 첫째, 충분한 양입니다.

주님은 몰약의 한 방울이 아니라, 몰약의 한 바구니

입니다. 주님은 몰약 성분이 있는 하나의 작은 

나무가지나 한송이의 꽃이 아니라, 그것들로 

가득채워진 한 다발의 향낭입니다. 

내가 필요로 하는 몰약은 그리스도 안에 

충분하게 있습니다.

 

(2) 다양성을 위한 향낭; 

그리스도 안에는 필요한 것이 하나만 있는 것이 

아니라, 필요한 모든 것이 있습니다.; 

그래서 당신은 주님 안에서 완전해집니다.

 

(3) 보관을 위한 향낭입니다.

몰약이 바닥에 떨어지거나 밟히지 않고, 마치 

하나님이 당신의 아들안에 모든 덕목과 탁월함을 

묶어 놓은 것처럼, 몰약의 재료들을 묶어서 보관해 

놓았습니다. 땅에 쏟아진 몰약이 아니라 작은 상자에 

보관되어 있는 몰약입니다. 

그리스도도 이와 같습니다. 

따라서 주님은 여전히 이 시간에도 

"주님을 통하여 하나님께 오는 자들을 최대한 

구원" 하실 수 있습니다.

 

(4) 얼마나 부지런히 보살펴야 하는지 

보여주기 위한 몰약 향낭.

우리는 그분의 말씀을 귀중히 여기고, 그분의 

법령을 존중하고, 그분의 가르침에 순종해야 합니다. 

귀중한 몰약의 향낭처럼, 그분을 우리와 함께 

묶어서 영원히 같이 있게 해야 합니다.

 

(5) 모든 사람들을 위한 흔한 몰약이 아니라 

특별한 사람들을 위한 몰약 향낭.

주님의 백성들을 위해, 창세 이전부터 그들의 

이름을 붙여 놓은 몰약 향낭은 정말로 특별하고 

구별되는 은총입니다. 

오! 주님께서 당신의 비밀스러운 곳으로 

받아들인 백성들은 축복받은 사람들입니다. 

"몰약 향낭은 "나의 사랑하는 자"입니다. 라고 

말할 수 있는 사람은 정말로 선택된 

행복한 사람입니다."

 

III. 그리스도가 소중하다는 감각과 함께 

나의 것이라는 소유 의식이 결합됩니다.

그것은 "나의 사랑하는 자"입니다. 사랑하는 

신자들이여, 그리스도는 당신의 사랑이십니까? 

구세주 – 그것도 좋습니다; 그러나 

나의 구세주 – 그것은 최고중의 최고입니다.

 

빵이 내 것이 아니라면 무슨 소용이 있습니까? 

나는 굶어서 죽을 수도 있습니다. 

금이 내 것이 아니라면 무슨 가치가 있습니까? 

나는 노동 현장에서 죽을 수도 있습니다. 

그래서 그리스도의 소중함이 나의 소유가 되기를 

바랍니다: "나의 사랑하는 자."

 

당신은 믿음의 손으로 그리스도를 잡은 적이 

있습니까? 그것이 유일한 믿음의 표현은 아닙니다. 

"몰약 향낭은 나에게는 나의 사랑하는 자“ 입니다. 

주님의 수는 그렇게 많지 않았습니다. 나의 주님은 

마른 땅에서 나온 하나의 뿌리에서 수많은 

군중이 되셨습니다.

 

사람들은 주님과 교제하는 것보다 더 빠르게 연극을 

보러 가거나, 춤을 추러 갈 것입니다. 사람들은 

이세벨 세계의 뺨에 있는 아름다움을 볼 수는 있지만, 

나의 주인이며 주님이신 그분의 완전함은 볼 수 

없습니다.

 

그들이 하고 싶은 것을 말하고, 그들이 기뻐하는 

대로 생각하게 내버려 두세요. 모든 피조물들은 

자신만의 기쁨을 가지고 있습니다. 그러나 

"몰약 향낭은 나에게는- 나에게는- 

나의 사랑하는 자" 입니다. 

주님을 몰약 향낭으로 생각하는 사람이 없다면, 

“나에게는, 몰약 향낭 = 나의 사랑하는 자” 

입니다."

 

IV. 소유의 감각과 즐거움의 감각은 항상 

그리스도인들이 주님과의 지속적인 교제를 

갈망하도록 이끌 것입니다.

교회는 "내가 이 몰약 향낭을 내 어깨에 짊어 

지겠습니다"라고 말하지 않습니다. 그리스도는 

그리스도인에게 짐이 아닙니다. 

그녀는 "내가 이 몰약 향낭을 내 등에 올려 

놓겠습니다"라고 말하지 않습니다. 

교회는 그녀의 얼굴쪽이 아닌 등뒤에 숨겨진 

그리스도를 보고 싶지는 않습니다. 그래서

그녀는 그리스도를 볼 수 있고, 또 그녀의 

심장 가까이 있는, 자신의 품속에, 

그분이 있기를 원하고 있습니다.

 

1. 욕망의 표현입니다. 

그녀는 계속해서 그리스도의 사랑을 의식하기를 

원합니다. 당신도 같은 욕망을 느끼지 않습니까?

 

2. 그녀의 욕망뿐 아니라 자신감이기도 합니다. 

그녀는 "그래서 그는 나와 함께 있을 것이다"라고 

말하는 것 같습니다. 

당신은 그리스도와의 눈에 보이는 친교를 중단할 수 

있지만, 그리스도는 자신의 백성들에게서 결코 

떠나지 않으실 것입니다. 주님은 눈을 감고 얼굴을 

당신에게서 숨길 수 있지만, 주님의 마음은 결코 

당신에게서 떠날 수 없습니다.

 

3. 이것은 또한 결심입니다. 

그녀는 원하고, 믿으며, 그것을 결심합니다. 

주님, 당신은 나와 함께 있으며, 

앞으로도 항상 나와 함께 있을 것입니다. 

나는 형제 여러분들에게 호소합니다. 

오늘 아침, 하나님의 힘으로, 

이런 결심을 해서, 그리스도에게로

더 가까이 밀착하지 않으시겠습니까?

I. CHRIST JESUS IS UNUTTERABLY PRECIOUS TO BELIEVERS. 

Observe first, that nothing gives the believer so much joy as fellowship with Christ. In our esteem, the joys of earth are little better than husks for swine compared with Jesus the heavenly manna. I would rather have one mouthful of Christ's love, and a sip of His fellowship, than a whole world full of carnal delights. 

What is the chaff to the wheat? What is the sparkling paste to the true diamond? What is a dream to the glorious reality? What is time's mirth in its best trim compared to our Lord Jesus in His most despised estate? We may plainly see that Christ is very precious to the believer, because to him there is nothing good without Christ. 

Oh, what a howling wilderness is this world without my Lord! If once He groweth angry, and doth, though it be for a moment, hide Himself from me, withered are the flowers of my garden; my pleasant fruits decay; the birds suspend their songs, and black night lowers over all my hopes. 

On the other hand, when all earthly comforts have failed you, have you not found quite enough in your Lord? Do you remember when you were poor? Oh! how near Christ was to you, and how rich He made you! You were despised and rejected of men, and no man gave you a good word! Ah! sweet was His fellowship then, and how delightful to hear Him say, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God!" 

As afflictions abound, even so do consolations abound by Christ Jesus. Nor should I be straining the truth if I say that the Christian would sooner give up anything than forsake his Master. If it came to this, that you must deny Christ, or give up the dearest thing you have, would you deliberate? 

I think we could go further, dear friends, and say, not only could we give up everything, but I think, when love is fervent, and the flesh is kept under, we could suffer anything with Christ. I met, in one of Samuel Rutherford's letters, an extraordinary expression, where he speaks of the coals of Divine wrath all falling upon the head of Christ, so that not one might fall upon His people. "And yet," saith he, "if one of those coals should drop from His head upon urine and did utterly consume me, yet if I felt it was a part of the coals that fell on Him, and I was bearing it for His sake, and in communion with Him, I would choose it for my heaven." 

One thing I know proveth, beloved, that you esteem Christ to be very precious, namely, that you want others to know Him too. The more your love grows, beloved, the more insatiable will be your desire that others should love Him, till it will come to this that you will be, like Paul, "in labours more abundant," spending and being spent that you may bring the rest of Christ's elect body into union with their glorious head.


II. THE SOUL CLINGETH TO CHRIST, AND SHE HATH GOOD REASON FOR SO DOING, for her own words are, "A bundle of myrrh is my Well-beloved unto me."

1. Jesus Christ is like myrrh.

(1) Myrrh may be well the type of Christ for its preciousness. It was an exceedingly expensive drug. We know that Jacob sent some of it down into Egypt as being one of the choice products of the land. It is always spoken of in Scripture as being a rich, rare and costly substance. But no myrrh could ever compare with Him, for Jesus Christ is so precious, that it heaven and earth were put together they could not buy another Saviour.

(2) Myrrh, again, was pleasant. It was a pleasant thing to be in a chamber perfumed with myrrh. Through the nostrils myrrh conveys delight to the human mind; but Christ gives delight to His people, not through one channel, but through every avenue.

(3) Moreover, myrrh is perfuming. It is used to give a sweet smell to other things. And surely, beloved, Jesus Christ is very perfuming to His people. Does not He perfume their prayers, so that the Lord smelleth a sweet savour? Doth He not perfume their songs, so that they become like vials full of odour sweet?

(4) Myrrh has preserving qualities. It was used to prevent corruption. What is there which can preserve the soul but Christ Jesus? What is the myrrh which keeps our works, which in themselves are dead, and corrupt, and rotten — what, I say, keeps them from becoming a foul stench in the nostrils of God, but that Christ is in them?

(5) Myrrh, again, was used as a disinfectant. And there doubtless is some power in myrrh to preserve from infectious disease. Well, brethren, certain I am it is so with Christ. You have to go into the world, which is like ,a great lazar-house; but if you carry Christ with you, you will never catch the world s disease.

(6) But myrrh was believed by the ancient physicians to do more than this — it was a cure — it did not merely prevent, but it healed. Certain it is that your Christ is the best medicine for the soul. His name is Jehovah Rophi — "I am the Lord that healeth them."(7) Myrrh was used in the East as a beautifier. The belief of Oriental women was, that it removed wrinkles and stains from the face, and they used it constantly for the perfecting of their charms. I do not know how that may be, but I know that nothing makes the believer so beautiful as being with Christ. He is beautiful in the eyes of God, of holy angels, and of his fellow-men.

(8) Myrrh might well be used as an emblem of our Lord from its connection with sacrifice. It was one of the precious drugs used in making the holy oil with which the priests were anointed and the frankincense which burned perpetually before God. It is this, the sacrificial character of Christ, which is at the root and bottom of all that Christ is most precious to His people. O Lamb of God our sacrifice, we must remember Thee.

2. Christ is called a bundle of myrrh, or, as some translate it, a bag of myrrh, or a box of myrrh. There were three sorts of myrrh; there was the myrrh in sprigs, which being burnt made a sweet smell; then there was myrrh, a dried spice; and then, thirdly, there was myrrh a flowing oil. We do not know to which there is reference here. But why is it said "a bundle of myrrh"?

(1) First, for the plenty of it. He is not a drop of it, He is a casketful. He is not a sprig or flower of it, but a whole bundleful. There is enough in Christ for my necessities.

(2) A bundle again, for variety; for there is in Christ not only the one thing needful, but "ye are complete in Him; there is everything needful.

(3) He is a bundle of myrrh again, for preservation — not loose myrrh to be dropped on the floor or trodden on, but myrrh tied up, as though God bound up all virtues and excellences in His Son: not myrrh spilt on the ground, but myrrh in a box — myrrh kept in a casket. Such is Christ. "Able to save unto the uttermost them that come unto God through Him," is He still unto this hour.

(4) A bundle of myrrh again, to show how diligently we should take care of it. We must treasure up His words, prize His ordinances, obey His precepts, tie Him up and keep Him ever with us as a precious bundle of myrrh.

(5) And yet again, a bundle of myrrh for speciality, as if He were not common myrrh for everybody. No, no, no; there is distinguishing, discriminating grace — a bundle tied up for His people and labelled with their names from before the foundation of the world. Oh! blessed people whom the Lord hath admitted into His secrets! Oh! choice and happy people who are thus made to say, "A bottle of myrrh is my Well-beloved unto me."

III. With a sense of Christ's preciousness is combined A CONSCIOUSNESS OF POSSESSION. 

It is "my Well-beloved." My dear hearer, is Christ your well-beloved? A Saviour — that is well; but my Saviour — that is the best of the best. What is the use of bread if it is not mine? I may die of hunger. Of what value is gold, if it be not mine? I may yet die in a workhouse. I want this preciousness to be mine. 

"My Well-beloved." Have you ever laid hold on Christ by the hand of faith? But that is not the only word. "A bundle of myrrh is my Well-beloved unto me." He is not so to many. Ah! my Lord is a root out of a dry ground to multitudes. They would sooner go to a play or a dance than they would have any fellowship with Him. 

They can see the beauties upon the cheeks of this Jezebel world, but they cannot see the perfections of my Lord and Master. Well! well! well! Let them say what they will, and let them think as they please, every creature hath its own joy, but "a bundle of myrrh is my Well-beloved unto me" — unto me — unto me, and if there is not another who finds Him so, yet "a bundle of myrrh is my Well-beloved unto me."

IV. A SENSE OF POSSESSION AND A SENSE OF ENJOYMENT WILL ALWAYS LEAD THE CHRISTIAN TO DESIRE CONSTANT FELLOWSHIP. 

The Church does not say, "I will put this bundle of myrrh on my shoulders" — Christ is no burden to a Christian. She does not say, "I will put this bundle of myrrh on my back" — the Church does not want to have Christ concealed from her face. She desires to have Him where she can see Him, and near to her heart.

1. It is an expression of desire — her desire that she may have the consciousness of Christ's love continually. Do not you feel the same desire?

2. But then, it is not only her desire, but it is also her confidence. She seems to say, "He will be with me thus." You may have a suspension of visible fellowship with Christ, but Christ never will go away from His people really. He may close His eyes and hide HIS face from you, but His heart never can depart from you.

3. This is also a resolve. She desires, she believes, and she resolves it. Lord, Thou shalt be with me, Thou shalt be with me always. I appeal to you, brethren, will you not make this resolve in God's strength this morning to cling close to Christ?
