 Revelation 2:9-11 

Message to the Church in Smyrna

9I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. 10Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. 11He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

9I know how much you suffer and how poor you are, but you are rich. I also know the cruel things being said about you by people who claim to be God's people. But they are not really God's people. They are a group that belongs to Satan. 10Don't worry about what you will suffer. The devil will throw some of you into jail, and you will be tested and made to suffer for ten days. But if you are faithful until you die, I will reward you with a glorious life.+ 11 If you have ears, listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. Whoever wins the victory will not be hurt by the second death.+

9내가 네 환난과 궁핍을 아노니 실상은 네가 부요한 자니라 자칭 유대인이라 하는 자들의 훼방도 아노니 실상은 유대인이 아니요 사단의 회라 10네가 장차 받을 고난을 두려워 말라 볼지어다 마귀가 장차 너희 가운데서 몇 사람을 옥에 던져 시험을 받게 하리니 너희가 십일 동안 환난을 받으리라 네가 죽도록 충성하라 ! 그리하면 내가 생명의 면류관을 네게 주리라 11귀 있는 자는 성령이 교회들에게 하시는 말씀을 들을지어다 이기는 자는 둘째 사망의 해를 받지 아니하리라

그리스도께서 "처음이요 마지막"이라는 것은 무엇을 의미합니까? 그 말씀은 이사야서 44장 6절, 7절(6이스라엘의 왕인 여호와,이스라엘의 구속자인 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 나는 처음이요 나는 마지막이라 나 외에 다른 신이 없느니라 7내가 옛날 백성을 세운 이후로 나처럼 외치며 고하며 진술할 자가 누구뇨 있거든 될 일과 장차 올 일을 고할지어다; 6Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. 7And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.)에서 인용되었는데, 

여기에서 하나님은 모든 사람들보다 먼저 계시고, 모든 사람들을 아는 것처럼 홀로 서서, 모든 사람들을 통하여 연속하고 계시다는 사실에  대한 진리의 선포자로서 자신의 주장을 강조하십니다. 우리 주님이 이 구절을 자신을 위해 사용하실 때, 그분은 자신을 영원한 여호와(Jehovah)로 만드십니다. 그분은 지극히 높으신 하나님에게만 속한 칭호를 사용합니다. 

그러나 그분의 신성을 가장 잘 나타내는 칭호와 밀접한 관련이 있는 것은 그분의 인성을 가장 잘 나타내는 칭호입니다. 십자가는 신성의 배경에서 볼 수 있습니다. (십자가에서) 고통받는 사람은, 구원하시는 하나님과 같은 한 분이십니다. 이 두 칭호는 함께 위대한 구원의 개요를 형성하여, 어떤 종류의 세속적 시련에 직면하여도, 신성한 자비와 사랑의 위대한 계획을 묵상하도록 마음을 고양시킵니다.

What is meant by Christ being "the First and the Last"? The words are quoted from Isaiah 44:6, 7, where God supports His claim as the declarer of truth on the fact that He was before all, and continues through all, standing alone as acquainted with all. When our Lord uses this phrase for Himself, He makes Himself the Eternal Jehovah. He uses a title which belongs only to the Most High God. 

And yet in close connection with the title which best marks His Deity is the title which best marks His humanity — "which was dead, and lived again." The Cross is seen on the background of the Divine. The suffering Man is one with the saving God. The two titles together form a compendium of the great salvation, and lift the mind to the contemplation of the grand scheme of the Divine mercy and love, as against any earthly trial of whatever kind.
