Revelation 2:21-29

Message to the Church in Thyatira

21And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. 22Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 23And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. 24But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. 25But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 26And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 28And I will give him the morning star. 29He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

The Letter to Thyatira

21I gave her a chance to turn from her sins, but she did not want to stop doing these immoral things.

22I am going to strike down Jezebel. Everyone who does these immoral things with her will also be punished, if they don't stop. 23 I will even kill her followers.+ Then all the churches will see that I know everyone's thoughts and feelings. I will treat each of you as you deserve.

24Some of you in Thyatira don't follow Jezebel's teaching. You don't know anything about what her followers call the “deep secrets of Satan.” So I won't burden you down with any other commands. 25But until I come, you must hold firmly to the teaching you have.

26 I will give power over the nations to everyone who wins the victory and keeps on obeying me until the end. 27-28I will give each of them the same power my Father has given me. They will rule the nations with an iron rod and smash those nations to pieces like clay pots. I will also give them the morning star.+

29If you have ears, listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.

21또 내가 그에게 회개할 기회를 주었으되 그 음행을 회개하고자 아니하는도다 22볼지어다 내가 그를 침상에 던질 터이요 또 그로 더불어 간음하는 자들도 만일 그의 행위를 회개치 아니하면 큰 환난 가운데 던지고 23또 내가 사망으로 그의 자녀를 죽이리니 모든 교회가 나는 사람의 뜻과 마음을 살피는 자인 줄 알지라 내가 너희 각 사람의 행위대로 갚아주리라 24두아디라에 남아 있어 이 교훈을 받지 아니하고 소위 사단의 깊은 것을 알지 못하는 너희에게 말하노니 다른 짐으로 너희에게 지울 것이 없노라 25다만 너희에게 있는 것을 내가 올 때까지 굳게 잡으라 26이기는 자와 끝까지 내 일을 지키는 그에게 만국을 다스리는 권세를 주리니 27그가 철장을 가지고 저희를 다스려 질그릇 깨뜨리는 것과 같이 하리라 나도 내 아버지께 받은 것이 그러하니라 28내가 또 그에게 새벽 별을 주리라 29귀있는 자는 성령이 교회들에게 하시는 말씀을 들을지어다

그들이 이 이세벨을 교회에서 쫓아내도록 주장하지 않은 이유는, 매우 이상해 보입니다. 아마도 그녀는 두아디라(Thyatira)에서 어느 정도 유명하고, 지위가 있는, 부자인 여자이었을 것입니다.

엄격한 공정성을 추구할 만큼 정확하게 사도적인 교회는 거의 없습니다. 금반지와 게이 의상은 잘 어울립니다. 그녀가 여선지자였든 아니든, 그녀가 일년에 수 천을 가지고 있고, 그것을 그녀의 친구들에게 적용하는 방법을 알고 있다면, 낮은 계급의 사람이 첫번째 여행에서 검열을 피할 수 없을 때, 많은 가벼운 죄들을 짓거나, 그런 죄들이 윙크하며 유혹할 수도 있습니다.  

재물과 세속적인 존엄에는 황홀한 무언가가 있습니다 - 그것들은 인류를 매우 터무니 없고, 모순된 일을 하게 만들고, 심지어 신약의 교회들조차 그것들과 함께 매료되었습니다.

아마도 이 여자 예언자는, 이혼하는 것이 흔한 이 부드럽고 온화한 시대에 훌륭한 기독교도인으로 여겨졌을 것입니다. 그녀는 아마도, 훌륭한 기독교인과 정통 신자처럼, 교회를 기부하고, 성직자들을 즐겁게 했을 것입니다; 그리고 이것은 많은 죄를 덮을 것입니다.

그러나 그리스도께서는 사람들이 하는 것처럼 심판하지 않으십니다. 왜냐하면 그분은 속 마음을 살피시며, 많은 외양만 좋은 행위들이, 공개적으로 시도하는 것 이외에, 다른 계획들을 숨기기 위한 포장일 뿐임을 아시기 때문입니다.

마음을 살피시는 분에게 부과되는 것은 없습니다. 모든 것을 아시고, 모든 품성을 분별하시고, 책망 없이 죄가 지나가도록 하지 않으시는, 그러한 리더를 교회가 갖고 있는 것은 큰 자비입니다.

Why they did not insist upon having this Jezebel turned out of the Church appears exceedingly strange. Perhaps she was a woman of wealth and riches, of some note and rank in Thyatira. 

There are few Churches so exactly apostolic as to pursue a strict impartiality. The gold ring and the gay clothing goes a great way. A woman, whether she was a prophetess or not, provided she had some thousands a year, and knew how to apply it among her friends, might be guilty of a great many peccadillos and have them winked at, when one of low degree could not escape censure for the first trip. 

There is something bewitching in riches and worldly dignity — they make mankind do very absurd and inconsistent things, and even New Testament Churches have been fascinated therewith. 

Perhaps this prophetess would have been accounted a good Christian in these soft, good-natured times when divorces are so common. She would probably have endowed a church, entertained the clergy, like a good Christian and orthodox believer; and this would cover a multitude of sins. 

But Christ does not judge as men do, for He looks into the heart and sees that many specious actions are only intended as a cover to conceal other designs than those that are pretended publicly. 

There is no imposing upon Him that searches the hearts. It is a great mercy that the Church has such an Head, who knows all things, and discerns all characters, and will not suffer sin to pass without rebuke.
