I. 인간이 사랑하는 주된 목적들은 무엇입니까?

1. 돈. — 사람들이 부를 위해 하지 않거나 또는 고통받지 않는 것은 무엇이 있습니까?

2. 패션. — 판테온(모든 신을 위한 신전)에는 바알(풍요와 폭풍우의 남신)과 몰록(불 위에 손을 뻗은 황소 머리의 신)이 있습니다 — 화려함의 신이자 불의 신입니다! 그리고 바알도 자신의 희생물을 가지고 있습니다. 그들 자신보다 조금 더 높은 원에 들어가서, 세상 앞에서 눈에 띄게 돋보이게 하는 것은, 얼마나 가치없는 인공물입니까! 아첨하는 말에 무슨 의미가 있습니까! 낮은 사람들이 자신들을 조금 더 높이기 위해 얼마나 몸을 웅크릴 것입니까!

3. 과학. — 여기서 우리는 더 높은 위치에 도달하고, 더 깨끗한 공기를 마시고 있다고 느낍니다. 하늘과 땅 - 바다와 해안 - 광물, 식물, 동물의 왕국은 과학 애호가를 위한 보물로 가득합니다. 그래서 여기서 과학자는 즐거워합니다. 낮은 밤과 같고, 밤은 낮과 같습니다. - "시간은 고려되지 않고, 식사도 맛보지 않은채, 지나갑니다." 그의 온 영혼이 그의 사랑하는 것과 교제하는 동안.

그러나 그리스도는 살아계신 분입니다! "그분은 죽었지만 다시 살아났습니다." 우리들의 열망을 듣고 응답할 수 있는 마음이 그분의 가슴에서 빛납니다. 그래서 어디에서나 동정을 구하는 것은 "죽은 것 가운데서 살아있는 것을 찾는 것"입니다! 그리스도 안에서 구하십시오! 그분은 지금도 살아 계셔서 (당신을) 사랑합니다!

2. 그분은 너무나 사랑스럽기 때문입니다. 선을 행하러 다니시는 중,  우리와 같은 사람들에게 둘러싸인 그분을 보십시오. 당신은 (이 보다) 더 매력적인 성격을 ​​상상할 수 있습니까? 그분은 "전체가 사랑스럽지" 않습니까?

3. 그분은 이미 우리에게 많은 사랑을 보여 주셨습니다.

4. 우리는 그분에게 올 때마다 그분의 사랑에 의존할 수 있습니다. 시도하지 않고, 알 수 없는 - 미래! 우리를 무겁게 누르는 것은 바로 이것입니다. 어떤 악, 시련, 고난들이 발생하지 않을지 모릅니다! 

우리에게 평화를 가져다주는 유일한 것은 – 우리의 미래가 모든 지혜롭고, 지치지 않고, 전능한 사랑의 손에 있다는 확신입니다. 

그래서 이것이 그리스도께서 당신의 백성들에게 주신 보증이 아닙니까? 

"보라, 나는 항상 너희들과 함께 있다." "나의 은혜는 너에게 충분하다." "나를 사랑하는 자들에게 좋은 것을 주기 위해, 모든 것들이 함께 일한다." 이런 말씀이 위로가 되지 않습니까?

I. WHAT ARE THE CHIEF OBJECTS OF MAN'S LOVE?

1. Money. — What is there men will not do or suffer for the sake of wealth?

2. Fashion. — There is a Baal as well as a Moloch in the Pantheon — a god of splendour as well as a god of fire! And Baal has his sacrifices too. To enter a circle a little above their own, to stand out prominently before the world — what unworthy artifices! what mean flatteries! How low men will stoop to raise themselves a little higher!

3. Science. — Here we feel that we are getting to a loftier elevation, and breathing purer air. Heaven and earth — sea and shore — the mineral, vegetable, and animal kingdoms, are full of treasures for the lover of science. And here he revels. Day is as night, and night as day — "the hours uncounted, meals untasted pass;" whilst his whole soul is in communion with his beloved.

4. Literature. — And surely such a study is not without its fascinations. And cultivated minds there are that make an idol of this object — Literature is the beloved of their souls.

II. WHY DOES CHRIST DESERVE A WARMER LOVE?

1. Because He can love us in return. Money, Fashion, Science, Literature, are dead things; and the dead have no power to sympathize — their give not "smile for smile, or sigh for sigh." But Christ is a living one! "He was dead, but is alive again." There glows a heart in his Bosom that can hear and answer the yearnings of ours. And seeking sympathy anywhere beside is "seeking the living among the dead."! Seek it in Christ! He lives and loves!

2. Because He is so exceeding lovely. See Him encompassed with a body like our own — going about doing good. Can you imagine a character more attractive? Is He not "altogether lovely"?

3. He has shown us so much love already.

4. We may depend upon His love for all time to come. The future — untried, unknown! it is this which weighs on us. What evils, trials, sufferings may there not be in store! The only thing to bring us peace is — the assurance that our future is in the hands of all-wise, unwearied, almighty Love l And is not this the assurance that Christ gives to His people? "Lo, I am with you alway." "My grace is sufficient for you." "All things work together for good to them that love Me." Is not this comforting?
